Ask our technical teamPolyurethane absorbs the impact of sharp, abrasive particles and springs back without losing material, so it holds up far longer than standard rubber linings in high-velocity slurry lines. It also resists the chemicals and constant moisture found in mineral processing circuits, and its molded, seamless interior leaves no cavities for solids to catch on, which keeps the gate from jamming. CMO’s polyurethane-lined valves fully encapsulate the cast body, so the abrasive media never touches the metal underneath.

The fix is hardware built for the job – a self-cleaning, beveled blade that slices through rags instead of catching on them, a cavity-free seat so nothing has anywhere to settle, and an actuator sized with enough torque margin to break through scale rather than stall.

A full-bore flow path that matches the pipeline diameter exactly, so there's no internal lip to trigger turbulence and wear. Dual elastomer sleeves that press together to shield the metal body from the abrasive flow while the valve is open. And a self-cleaning action, where the blade slices through the slurry and pushes solids out through the bottom of an open-frame body as it closes. For larger diameters, the valve body should also carry reinforced, welded sections to handle the structural thrust that heavy mining pipelines generate.

Rigid metal valves have no give, so they reflect that shock straight back into the system and strain the pipe joints. A pinch valve's flexible, fabric-reinforced elastomer sleeve flexes slightly under the surge, absorbing part of the kinetic energy before it can travel further down the line, then returns instantly to its original shape. Matching the sleeve's pressure rating to your expected surge level is what makes this protection reliable.

Diaphragm valves rely on an internal weir, which works fine for clean, low-viscosity fluids but becomes a problem with thick media: the weir restricts flow, accelerates erosion as abrasive particles pass over it, and gives grit and rock somewhere to collect and clog the line. A full-bore pinch valve's open sleeve matches the pipeline diameter exactly, so there's no obstruction for solids to build up against, friction losses drop, and the valve can usually be swapped in as a direct replacement for an ageing diaphragm valve without re-engineering the pipework.

Weekly, walk the line and check packing glands for weeping, listen for air leaks on pneumatic actuator lines, and confirm pressure valves are sitting within their rated range. Monthly, run a full open-and-close stroke on valves that normally sit static, since a gate or sleeve that's parked too long can seize – this matters most for knife gates in mineral processing duty. It's also worth keeping an essential spares kit on site rather than waiting for a failure to find out you need one.
